Treaty, Trenches, Mud, and Blood Publisher’s Description
World War I set the tone for the 20th century and introduced a new type of warfare: global, mechanical, and brutal. Nathan Hale has gathered some of the most fascinating true-life tales from the war and given them his inimitable Hazardous Tales twist. Easy to understand, funny, informative, and lively, this series is the best way to be introduced to some of the most well-known battles (and little-known secrets) of the infamous war.
My Goodreads Review
Join Nathanial Hale for another adventure through history. This time he will take the reader on an adventure through the events of WWI. You’ll learn about famous battles, technological developments, and world leaders.
In my opinion, this book is a fantastic way to learn about WWI history. While you won’t learn every detail, you will skim the surface of the major parties and events involved in WWI history. This graphic novel presents factual information in a fun-to-read graphic format that kids (and parents!) will enjoy.

Discussion Questions for Your Homeschool Study
1. Nathan Hale represents the country leaders using animals. What were your feelings about this choice? Did you find it effective? Were there animal choices you disagreed with?
2. What facts did you learn about WWI? Was this book a good way to teach kids (and adults!) about WWI?
3. Nathan Hale uses a very simple color palette. It is typically shades of black and white and shades of one additional color. In this book the additional color is orange (and maybe some brown). Why do you think he uses such a simple color palette? Did you enjoy it?
4. Treaty, Trenches, Mud, and Blood by Nathan Hales was part of my Outschool weekly graphic novel book club. I shared ideas for a book discussion of symbolism in the book on my Celebrate a Book Instagram:
