Monster Friends: Book Review and Discussion Guide

Save or Share:

Monster Friends is a sweet graphic novel about two adorable monsters who become friends. This is a great read for your elementary school student because of the story and the graphics.

I chose Monster Friends for my kid’s graphic novel online book club in 2023. It was one of the most popular graphic novels we read together because the kids loved the characters and the simple, but fun story.

Publisher’s Description: Monster Friends

“Reggie’s plan is to spend the whole summer brooding over his latest adventure gone wrong. But his friendly and curious neighbor, Emily, won’t let him sit alone and unhappy in his house forever! Despite their differences, these two monsters make the perfect pair of explorers. And with a map to make, a beach party to plan, and a sea monster to find, Reggie will have to learn to talk about his feelings and let new friends in!”

My Goodreads Review

While I gave this a 4-star rating, it should be noted that the overall rating from my 8-10-year-old students was most definitely a 5-star!

Reggie is house-sitting on his own so he can take a break from his recent scary adventures. He is ready for a quiet summer of chores and relaxing. His friendly neighbor, Emily, doesn’t feel the same way. She is ready for some new adventures and talks Reggie into joining her. Despite their differences, these two monsters make a great team of explorers and enjoy a summer full of adventures and new friends!

These two monsters are completely adorable and show so many qualities of being great friends. The illustrations are a ton of fun and the color palette is bright and playful. l was pleasantly surprised by how much the students enjoyed this simple, but fun tale of two monster friends.

My Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
