Miss Quinces by Kat Fajardo is a story about family, growing up, and being your unique self. The illustrations are vivid and the story is fun.

It’s a great story to discuss with kids and tweens which is why I chose Miss Quinces for my kid’s graphic novel online book club in 2024.

Publisher’s Description: Miss Quinces

“Sue just wants to spend the summer reading and making comics at sleepaway camp with her friends, but instead she gets stuck going to Honduras to visit relatives with her parents and two sisters.

They live way out in the country, which means no texting, no cable, and no Internet! The trip takes a turn for the worse when Sue’s mother announces that they’ll be having a surprise quinceañera for Sue, which is the last thing she wants. She can’t imagine wearing a big, floofy, colorful dress!

What is Sue going to do? And how will she survive all this “quality” time with her rambunctious family?”

My Goodreads Review

Sue isn’t interested in her family trip to Honduras. She’d rather stay home with her friends, but she is given no choice and now she is stuck with all of her relatives with no modern technology to keep her entertained.

To make matters worse, her mother is planning a quinceañera for Sue and she never agreed to this. Sue has to consider how a way that everyone can win in this situation and it is going to take some compromise and understanding.

I enjoyed this story other than a few choices made by the adults, specifically the mom. She treated Sue like she was only 11 or 12 and not about to turn 15. It was hard to remember her actual age in the book.

I appreciated the compromises made by all of the family members to reach an agreement that everyone could live with. I also thought it was realistic that Sue’s mom forgot to hold up her end of the bargain in the middle of everything going on.

It also worked well in the story for Sue to own her own decision about having a quinceañera instead of only doing it as part of a deal with her mom.

Great lessons. Colorful graphics. A fun read for tweens.

1. What compromises are made by the various characters in the book? Think about big compromises and smaller ones (like the dress).

2. How does Sue’s quinceañera reflect her uniqueness? How does her family help support her?

3. How do the illustrations change when a character is speaking in Spanish? Did you like the way this was done or would you have preferred to see the Spanish words on the page?
