The Hobbit Graphic Novel Book Review and Discussion Questions

Save or Share:

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien is a popular classic book, but did you know there is a graphic novel version? The Hobbit graphic novel is a fantastic way to introduce your kids to this classic story or allow them to enjoy it in a different format.

I chose The Hobbit graphic novel for my kid’s graphic novel online book club in 2023. Many kids found it overwhelming because there was a lot of small text on each page, but others absolutely loved it.

Publisher’s Description: The Hobbit Graphic

“‘The Hobbit’ is the story of Bilbo Baggins…a quiet and contented hobbit whose life is turned upside down when he joins the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves on their quest to reclaim the dwarves’ stolen treasure. It is a journey fraught with danger – and in the end, it is Bilbo alone who must face the guardian of this treasure, the most-dreaded dragon Smaug.

Illustrated in full colour throughout, and accompanied by the carefully abridged text of the original novel, this handsome authorised edition will introduce new generations to a magical masterpiece – and be treasured by Hobbit fans of all ages, everywhere.”

My Goodreads Review

Let me start by saying that, “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien is not one of my favorite books so a five-star rating would be impossible for any adaptation of it.

That said, this graphic adaptation of The Hobbit does a solid job of sharing the story in this particular writing format. The voice of the narrator helps move the story along while filling in necessary details to the plot.

There is an overwhelming amount of text on most of the pages, making it a little tiresome to navigate compared to most graphic novels. It is understandable because there is a lot to cover in the original story, but it does make it tricky to read at times.

Overall, I think this is a great adaptation for fans of graphic novels. It would be a good way to introduce the story or to enjoy it in a different format.

My Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The Hobbit graphic novel is a great adaptation of this classic title.

The Hobbit Graphic Novel: Discussion Questions for Your Homeschool Study

1. The narrator’s voice is a significant part of this story. What purpose do you think the narrator plays in telling this story? Did you like the narrator’s voice?

2. Look at the top of the panels on pages 26 and 27. What shape do the tops of the panels form? What does this communicate about the scene on the page? (It’s a bit like looking through a window)

3. If you have read the classic novel, how did this format compare? If you haven’t read the classic story, did this adaptation make you want to read it?
