Garlic and the Vampire Book Review and Homeschool Ideas
Garlic and the Vampire is one of the graphic novels I chose for my kid’s graphic novel online book club in 2023. It was a surprising graphic novel choice as I didn’t anticipate enjoying it as much as I did.

Publisher’s Description: Garlic and the Vampire
“Garlic feels as though she’s always doing something wrong. At least with her friend Carrot by her side and the kindly Witch Agnes encouraging her, Garlic is happy to just tend her garden, where it’s nice and safe.
But when her village of vegetable folk learns that a bloodthirsty vampire has moved into the nearby castle, they all agree that, in spite of her fear and self-doubt, Garlic is the obvious choice to confront him. And with everyone counting on her, Garlic reluctantly agrees to face the mysterious vampire, hoping she has what it takes.
After all, garlic drives away vampires…right?”
My Goodreads Review
Garlic is highly anxious and always nervous she isn’t doing things correctly. Fortunately, she lives with the kind witch, Agnes, who always encourages Garlic and makes life in the garden a peaceful one for all of the vegetable people. One day, they learn that a vampire has moved into the nearby castle and they are terrified to know his intentions. Garlic is the obvious choice to confront the new neighbor so she must summon all of her courage for the challenge.

Honestly, I didn’t read this book for quite some time because there was a Vampire. I wasn’t sure it would be a great pick for kids. But I am so glad I decided to pick it up and read it because it is a great story to read with kids. The vampire is actually very kind to Garlic and has retired from his previous ways of living. Instead of attacking the vegetable people, he shares his knowledge of gardening and helps them.
The book was dedicated to “all of the anxious bulbs” so it is a great book for talking about anxiety with kids. Garlic is anxious about so many things but also shows the courage and determination to help her community.
My Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
