How to Find the Best Books Online and Save Money

Save or Share:

Are you ready to get your eyes on a ton of books easily accessable online? Many that are FREE for you to read or listen to?

With several readers in the house, I need access to free (and cheap) books from sources other than the library.

And thankfully, there are plenty of options.

There are so many options for free or inexpensive books online and this doesn’t only include classic novels.

You can find modern books in all genres if you know where to look.

Free Books and Audiobooks

Libby

Libby is a FREE app that lets you access ebooks and audiobooks using your library card. You borrow a digital copy much like you borrow a print copy at the library.

Plus, if you prefer reading on your kindle, the app will send your books there. (US residents only)

Overdrive

Overdrive is connected to the Libby app (above) and also used in conjuntion with your library card.

Learning Ally

Learning Ally is well suited for your family if you have a child who is dyslexic, blind, or visually-impaired, then you can access this library of audiobooks for free. Your school system should be able to help with the paperwork and the process of gaining a free membership.

If you homeschool, you will need to submit the proper paperwork so your child can access the library of audiobooks for free.

Need help finding time to read? Check out a few practical ways to make time for reading in your busy life.

Librivox

Librivox contains a huge collection of FREE audiobooks available for streaming or download.

The only catch to Librivox is that the audiobooks are read by volunteers, so you take your chances with the sound. It helps to listen to a brief sample before you download.

Audible Stories – FREE  for a limited time (3/2020)

Right now, Audible Stories is offering free audiobooks for kids and teen while everyone is quarantined for the Coronoavirus.

Titles range from classics to modern day stories. This deal is worth exploring!

Novel 22

Novel 22 doesn’t have books for you to download, but the entire text of the book is available online.

This one is brand new to me and I am not sure I’d enjoy reading them this way, but it is certainly worth checking out!

Hoopla

Hoopla is another app that works in conjunction with your local library card if your library offers the service. You can download books, audiobooks, music, and even movies!

My library doesn’t offer this one, but many do! Check with your local service.

Membership Sites for Books

Sometimes it is worth it to spend a little money for the access you need.

Buying titles individually can add up quickly. And sometimes the free sites don’t have the books you need. Or the library waitlist is too long.

That’s where membership sites come in handy. For one low price a month, usually less than the cost of a book, you can access all of their available books (and sometimes more).

Epic!

Epic! is includes a HUGE digital library for kids 12 & under. You’ll find fiction, biographies, graphic novels, and more! Your membership access includes learning videos as well.

Right now you can get 30-days free and then pay $7.99 a month. Sign up here!

Amazon Audible

Amazon Audible boasts the “world’s largest library of audiobooks” so you are sure to find something for everyone!

Their monthly membership fee includes a free audiobook of your choice and 2 audible originals each month. In addition, members often receive discounted audiobook pricing.

There is usually an offer for a free or discounted trial period, so check out their current deal. The regular membership price is $14.95 a month.

Scribd

Scribd offers access to their library of books, audiobooks and magazines for just $8.99 a month.

Amazon Kindle Unlimited

Kindle Unlimited is my new personal favorite. Your monthly membership includes access to over a million ebooks and thousands of audiobooks!

You can read on your Kindle device or any phone or tablet using the Kindle app.
