What’s in Our Morning Basket?

We have had a very different year than we have ever had in the past and it has taken me a little while to learn to love the year I am with.  But we finally seem settled into aspects of our new routine.

That meant that this month we finally found our Morning Basket groove and have started a more consistent habit of reading together.

Our October Morning Basket continues to include a little of this and a little of that and we like the variety.  

I am certain that a well-stocked morning basket is a great way to accomplish a lot of learning first thing in the morning. I like to make sure we have art, history, literature, and so much more.

Non-Fiction Titles in Our Morning Basket

13 Architects Children Should Know by Florian Heine. We have been reading about the life and works of one architect every day or two.

Through My Eyes By Ruby Bridges. I can not say enough great things about this book. The content is sad, but worthy of discussion. Excellent book!

Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists: Paul Klee by Mike Venezia. The books in this series contain just the right amount of content for elementary school students.

Fiction Chapter Books in Our Morning Basket

Dicey’s Song by Cynthia Voigt. I read this in middle school and wanted to read it with my kids. The family relationships in this story are realistic and heart-warming, even though they aren’t easy.

Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt. This is the prequel to Dicey’s Song. We listened to it on our recent trip to visit family.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao. Excellent book based on the true story of a gorilla who spent many years of his life in a small cage in a shopping mall.

Poetry Books in Our Morning Basket

Stardines Swim Across the Sky by Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by Carin Berger. Great combinations of animals and objects in both poetry and illustration.

Scranimals by Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by Peter Sis. Another great combination book described in both poetry and pictures.

Presidential Misadventures by Bob Raczka and illustrated by Daniel E. Burr. A poem for every president!

Science and History Books for Our Morning Basket

Complete Book of the Microscope – We continue to read and work through the activities in this for our year in science.

Water is Water by Miranda Paul – As we take a look at microscopic creatures in water, this book is a lovely addition.

Around America to Win the Vote by Mara Rockliff – A great addition as we focus on aspects of American history this month.

Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio – another great book for our discussion of US History and voting.
